Andrew and BuggedBrains;

I think that "porch width" is the "ideal" overhang width.
For a porch, anything less than 6' in width isn't all that useful.
Anything over 8' in width begins to require unreasonably large
lumber for the rafters.
This width also just happens to be about ideal for the use of
recycled, tempered, patio door glazing and/or stock-length
corrugated metal roofing for the roof of the porch/overhang.

If wind-driven rain is still a problem with this overhang/porch
width, then I would say that moveable rain-deflecting devices
(roll-up grass mats, recycled single-glazed windows and French doors
etc) could be utilised rather than trying to increase the overhang
width.
