wet straw

Ok - take a bale of hay or straw and soak it in pond water with lots of
creepy crawlies. Now, plaster this bale on all sides with two inches of
cement mortar. Put a cover over it to keep the rain off. What is going
to happen in:
    one week
    one month
    one year
    ten years
    twenty years

My quess is that the mortar will wick out the moisture, which will be
released to the air. Any rotting will use up the available oxygen, stopping
further rotting as well as releasing co2 which will also inhibit rotting.
No???

Ok gang - have at.
