Hay all you lifters of bales off floors.

About using gravel under bale. Since wood has an aprox. R value of 1 per
inch (I think), the 2x4 ladder system offers 7 inches of wood insulation or
R 7. Foam insulation R values vary, but R10 per inch sticks in my head. For
my toe up I used the following, from inside to out, or vice versa;

        2x4 flat (R 3.5), 7in of pea gravel (R ??),  3in wide foam strip (R
30), 7in of pea gravel             (R ??), 2x4 flat (R 3.5)

This gave me a 24 in wide toe up, R 37 AND 14 inches of gravel for drainage.
The center foam strip also provided ridged center support for the bales
eliminating the need for the 2x4 "latter" cross members.
