stabilizing top row of bales

Hi there,
I am progressing nicely and have three walls up with three to go. The
problem I have come across is how to stabilize the top row of bales. I am
not using any kind of netting and the top row fits just under the soffit
blocking/vents. This means there is no access to the top of the bale. It
seems to be impossible to fit the bale snug to the post as it wants to lean
out about an inch or so. I thought that I could use some netting to attach
the bale to the row beneath, but that doesn't seem to pull it in tight.

I also want to use 2x10 old growth (recycled ) fir for my door sills. I
have been advised by a friend that I need to use a hard wood like Oak or
cherry to lessen wear and damage. I thought it would be OK because there
is only me using it on any kind of constant basis. On top of that, I have
a lot of the stuff but no cherry milled yet, although I do have a cherry
tree that I took down.

I would welcome your thoughts.

Thanks,

r
