I had an eye-opening experience recently with solar water heating. After
installing the water system (117 meters of 3/4¨ PVC) in a 40cm ditch, I
opened the valve to check for leaks. Left it full for about two hours in
the mid-day summer sun. When I drained it, I figured to take advantage of
the water to wash my hands. It nearly scalded me (that´s the eye-opening
part - Bart Simpson tripled).
I am now thinking about incorporating this in the construction of the
house. For example, a system of piping (either continuous flow or with
manifolds) installed on the north-facing roof. Fed by household cold water
plumbing and installed upstream of the tankless water heater. Perhaps
installed in an insulated, glassed structure. Definitely with a
pressure-relief valve!!
The winters here are mild so am not sure if the heat gain can stay ahead of
the heat loss. I have no doubts concerning the summer!
Anyone heard of something similar? Thoughts or ideas?
