This is description of tonight's NIGHTLINE on ABC:
TONIGHT'S SUBJECT: Robert Krulwich profiles an architect (a certified
genius: he got a MacArthur genius grant) who builds contemporary houses
out of old tires, hay bales, you name it, for some of the poorest people
in the South.
---
The subject above may sound familiar. This is the broadcast that we were
going to put on last Friday, before the United States and Britain bombed
targets in Iraq. A lot has happened since then. It turns out that a large
percentage of the weapons used missed their targets. The Clinton pardon
scandal, as we reported last night, just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
The FBI is engulfed in one of the biggest spy cases ever. But this seems
like a good day to put on something different. So here is what I said last
Friday about this broadcast. (I know, that makes me look lazy, but I
couldn't come up with a different way to say it.)
It's hard sometimes to describe programs done by Robert Krulwich. We often
just take him at his word that something will be great. He found Sambo
Mockbee, an architect who designs and builds cutting-edge contemporary
houses for the affluent. Now those are not necessarily the types of houses
that people down there want. So he was looking around for things to do,
and he decided that he, and his students, could build houses out of the
things that other people don't want, and give them to people who would
never be able to afford them. That's right: give them the houses.
He would go up and ask people if they would like him to build them a
house. Now you can imagine that those people might be a little suspicious,
and would take some convincing. But Mockbee's a persuasive person, and
there are a number of people now living in houses unlike any others you
have ever seen. It's a fun show and we think it's a good way to end the
week.
