No, I'm sure the list is never sold.

However, it is archived on the web.

If you've ever posted anything to this list (or to any other
discussion forum that is archived to the web), there's a good chance
that eventually you will receive spam. There are address harvesting
robots that spammers use to crawl the web, Usenet, etc, and all they
do is copy email addresses. They'll find you, some day, if they
haven't already.

What can you do?

	1) Use an email service with a strong (and enforced) anti
spam policy for their own subscribers and anti-spam filters. We use
the real time blackhole lists from www.mail-abuse.org to check the
source of all incoming mail.

	2) report spammers to spamcop (address given in an earlier
message), mail-abuse.org, and the postmaster(s) of the source. (You
can do this better if you learn how to read the mail headers, which
tell you where each piece of mail came from and how it got to you.)
Follow the instructions at mail-abuse.org.

	3) when surfing the net, make sure your email address and
other important information are NOT in the browser's preferences.
Unscrupulous websites can gather that info. (Or just don't go to
unscrupulous sites...)

That might cut it down a bit.

Another thing you can do is NOT fall prey to any email that you get
that asks you to "forward this to everyone you know".

Enough on the Nigerian spam. Let's get back to Straw Bale
