SB: Brick Veneer
Aaron,
I agree 100 % with Straw Wolf on the keeping houses simple and natural. It
seems that the maintenance free is appealing to you. What is appealing to
people interested in Strawbale homes is beauty and those natural plasters or
lime renders hold those qualities as well as the look of those bales. I
think people who are interested in these homes don't mind spending a few
hours patting their homes once in awhile.
To me the real issue is not what happening outside as much as detailing
against concentrated vapor transmission indoors in around doors, windows,
electrical boxes and ceiling connections.
In the Wisconsin climate, I think porches first, if not porches then wide
overhangs with lime renders or earthen with protective finishes. However in
the area that you live there is an abundance of stone up on top of those
hills. Stone veneers coming up a couple of feet pretty well take care of
what the overhangs miss. There is also cordwood which is also abundant where
you are and it can be real nice under the windows for the first few feet.
