The interview I taped in November 2000 with Roger Welsch, Nebraska
folklorist/humorist, author of the Shelter magazine article which
started (many believe) the current revival of straw bale construction,
and sometime CBS-TV Sunday Morning program contributor on things
Nebraskan, will air on Nebraska Educational Television the last week of
April.
Air Dates/Times:
NETV Saturday, April 28, 8:00 PM CT (7:00 PM MT); repeats Sunday, April
29, 2:30 PM CT (1:30 MT)
NETV2 (cable) Monday, April 30, Noon CT (1:00 PM MT)
If you do not receive NETV/NETV2 programming, two videotapes are
available for a one-week loan (charge for postage costs) from SBAN's
lending library.
Video taped at the 2nd Nebraska SB Conference at Halsey, Nebraska, in
September 2000, Pilgrim Holiness Church in Arthur, and the Libby Creek
stucco party at York, Nebraska, are shown during the interview.
Roger Welsch notes: "Thirty years ago I looked into the idea of
building a house of baled straw. Some of the buildings I looked at back
then were over 50 years old and doing just fine. As crazy as it may
seem, the idea is back and it's worth looking into."
Joyce notes: Roger shares some humorous stories about bale buildings
and interesting techniques he unearthed during his research, and guides
our conversation through the history and current revival of bale
building in Nebraska and beyond, and other aspects of natural building
methods and materials.
