"What it says" depends on the perceptions and experiences of the reader to
a considerable extent.  I took what he said differently than you did, for
example, and I'm sure others have their own interpretations.  I don't
think it's ever possible for anyone (including the original writer, over
time) to say "This is exactly what he said", much less "This is what he
(or I) really meant."
