You could also investigate using the heat of the compost piles to preheat
water. Just take care that the pipes are not damaged in the composting
process. There are a lot of natural acids involved, and of course the
turning needed to keep the pile active. You could also investigate the
capture of the methane that the pile produces for power and heat
production. bio diesel is another potential low tech way to go.
