RE: SB: RE: Kyoto

in response.....

can you name any other countries that have emission control laws for our
cars, clean air acts, mandatory ground water clean up, etc?

the usa IS leading by example. we just started WAY too late, after all the
other countries in the world started following in our (bad) footsteps.

I have been following this thread and I was determined not to make a
comment, but I now have to make a few points:

1) North Americans account for 20% of the world's population, but we
consume 80% of the world's resources, which means we are therefore
responsible not only for our own pollution, but also for the pollution
created by industrial activities in other countries which is required
to meet our enormous consumer appetites
2) as the richest contintent, we should lead by example, that is, we
should be leading in reduction of pollutants
3) the U.S. seems particularly reluctant to accept any boundaries on
its activities despite consequences for world peace and environmental
integrity; examples of this include the refusal to ratify the UN small
arms resolution, and the UN resolution placing limits on germ warfare!
4)industrial development in other countries, particularly third world
countries, is necessary to improve the standard of living in those
countries; North America, particularly the U.S., appears rather
hypocritical in its insistence in refusing to mitigate the effects of
industrial processes which produce our wealth, and denying other
countries time to reduce industrial pollution as they attempt to catch
up to us in terms of productivity.

Hello all.........Maybe I shouldn't have started this discussion!!!!!!
Anyway, if you have every been anywhere outside US you will see the
most
awful pollution. Try Czech Republic. Take a look at Bangkok. How
about
Mexico City? China? Can't wait to see what they have to do to clean
up
for Olympics. We can't pretend that we from US are the bad guys. That
is very antiquated thinking. Bush is correct. Why should we bear all
the burden?
