Re: SB: mud daubing

I discovered this when I began the earth plaster on the inside of the
house. We had stuffed bale gaps with loose straw, packed in pretty tight,
but when I tried to apply the plaster it had a tendency to pull out of the
holes. So I mixed up a stiff mix of mud and straw and packed it into the
offending openings. Just like you said..presto, a good firm surface upon
which to work. I also used the same mix to shape the curves around the
windows. Used blood lath to hold it in place and stuffed what I called my
"cob" mix behind the lath to form a really sturdy window reveal which took
the plaster well.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd have a crew of folks at a bale
raising responsible for stuffing with the mud straw mix as the walls went
up. Great stuff (pun intended).
