SB: Straw vs Hay

Hello,

I am new to the list -- I have been perusing the archives for the past week
or so. We are going to build a small strawbale house as a guesthouse
here. We live on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

My question is regarding hay as a building material. Most sources I have
seen advise against it because it is not a waste product, and it is usually
much more expensive -- I have yet to see another reason.

I have found a source of hay that is very local (less than 10 km)
and $1.50 cheaper per bale than the straw. It is last year's hay, very
dry and no one wants to buy it for their horses.

Is there a structural reason that we should not use hay?

Thanks
