SB: wood gutters

Has anyone on the list made their own wood gutters? I am thinking of
making some out of a batch of 1/2 cedar I was given. Since I already have
cedar 2x4 at the edge of my roof trusses, I was thinking all I needed to do
was make an L-shape and attach this to the underneath on the 2" edge, then
use an L shaped angle bar to attache the outer piece to the same existing
2x4. This would make the trough. I then considered how to waterproof this
and decided that using the tar roof patch goop would probably be a bad
idea....I want to use the rain water for garden and flushing toilets when
the power is out, which it often is on the island. So, my next thought was
to buy some 3 or 4" pvc pipe, run it through my table saw and cut it in
half length ways. This I could then lay in the trough, using the
appropriate 90 degree bends, also cut in half. For the down spout I was
thinking of using the regular aluminum pipe, but making a cedar box around it.

Any and all feedback would be welcome.

Of course, it might just be easier to go to the expense of buying then pre
made!

thanks,

r
