Rob's comment shows my difficulty in expressing myself clearly.  I 
was attempting to explain that wood plus modern boat building 
adhesives can produce reliable, waterproof joints.  If I were trying 
to produce a waterproof wooden gutter, I would use a tablesaw and a 
plane or jointer to prepare the wood, and screws plus marine 
adhesive/sealant for assembly of the joints.
