SB: Re: house on stilts

Kim Thompson (shipharbour@ns.sympatico.ca)
built her two-storey, loadbearing SB house
on a pole foundation. She has made a video as well as a
number of booklets relating to the project (which are still
available I think). She did have photos and description
up on a website years ago (search for Straw House Herbals).

In the earliest days of this List (ie see List archives), Kim
also contributed to this discussion group.

A pole or pier foundation does not preclude the possibility of
having thermal mass in the floor. A suspended concrete slab
floor is possible as is a thin mass topping (ie 2" or so) on top of
the wooden subfloor deck.

It is largely the soil bearing capacity (if not bearing on bedrock)
which will determine whether or not a pole or pier foundation is cost
effective.
