Re: SB: Outside air, was:breathability

Norbert,, Rob, et.al--

Once more into the breach responding to the "sucker bait"...

Since I live in Texas and we are not cold enough to justify a masonry
heater, I am much more interested in a more conventional fireplace.

In the long exchange you listed from the masonry heating association
Website, the discussion was entirely about masonry heaters in a heating
climate. As the excerpts said, the air requirement for a fireplace is MUCH
higher than for the masonry heater.

It seems to me, then, that you have not at all addressed the desirability
of outside makeup air for a fireplace.

I am quite willing to be convinced, but I have seen no studies regarding
this, either. Could you perhaps point me to one?

I think it's always interesting to read the stuff that "everyone knows"
based upon tests that really don't pertain to the question.

To make my own plans a bit more clear, I am looking at building in a small
fireplace of some kind as a very occasional supplemental heat source. In
fact, it would be used so seldom that I'm not convinced I'll even bother
with it at all. However, if I do I am very interested in the airflow
requirements for such fireplace, and what quantity of conditioned air is
being used compared to the heating benefits.

So--outside of masonry heaters, is there any realistic data?

David
