SB: Help with metal roof installation

I have ordered all the materials to install a steel roof on my
house with the eventual purpose of collecting rain water. I will
not remove the current single layer of asphalt shingles on the
roof. I have seen it installed two ways. The first and most common
is by running latice strips every 3 feet paralel to the roof line
and attaching the panels to this strips. The second way is by
covering the existing shingles with tar paper and attacing the
metal sheets directly to the decing thru the tar paper and
shingles. Question, what is the superior method. I live in central
texas and extreme heat is a concern, but believe that attaching
the panels directly to the decking might reduce sound transmition
problems (when it rains) and provide for a more wind proof
installation. On the other hand, I am afraid that installing
directly might cause buckling problems under extreme heat
conditions encountered here in central Texas.
Opinions, suggestions, web links, help?
