Choose a good builder and ask him or her how long it will take.

That sometimes happens, but a builder should be able to give a range of
uncertainty--within the conditions at the start of work. Remember if these
conditions change (like if the money dries up, or a new wing is added), then
the schedule will also change.

> Did lack of money enter the mix?

There's a triangle of aspects of the building process:
speed--quality--cost It's commonly said that you can have two of the
three, but not all three. Any change in one will also impact the other two.
For instance, if you have less money then either the quality or speed (or
both) will suffer. If you have lots of money to grease the wheels, you can
buy both quality and speed.

> Did lack of building skills enter the mix?

Usually not...that would show up in quality more than time.

> Did unforeseen time constraints.....?

Building is a cooperative effort involving many, many disparate elements:
material suppliers, many different kinds of tradespersons (all with their
own schedules and agendas), bankers, goverment agencies, people with big
equipment, the weather, workers having births, deaths, illnesses and injury
and home owners trying to make up their minds about hundreds of different
things. It's really a wonder anything gets done at all, and you can choose
your own reasons for sucess or failure:

    wizardry
    prayer
    good hearted cooperation
    karma
    greed
    fear
    obsession
    the economy
    luck
    none of the above
    all of the above
