SB: Fw: Could we build a straw-bale hangar?

Happy Happy New Year Folks...Please send snow our way in Alberta if you have
any.

Anyone near Wisconsin? This is an interesting idea for a building...any
suggestions? Please reply to the Julia directly.

Subject: Could we build a straw-bale hangar?

Hello,

I got your email from a web site about building with straw bales. My
husband plans to rebuild the airplane hangar in our back yard (we live
on a shared airstrip) and talked about insulating it, so that he could
use it as a workshop. We live in Wisconsin, so the insulation will have
to be significant!

Since you are building with straw in Canada, I wondered if you might
offer your thoughts on the feasability of constructing a large building
with straw. We currently have a metal-skinned pole barn, 45'x45', but
it was poorly planned and is facing the wrong way. (Why someone would
build an airplane hangar and not have the door face the runway is beyond
me.) The plan is to take down the building and rebuild it rotated 90
degrees. We can probably re-use the roofing materials and most of the
wooden frame.

I appreciate your time,

Julia Mason
