Re: SB: Re: Meeting Hall for el Lupo and Friends

Robbie, Robbie, Robbie,

One thing with this straw dome idea is it would likely require a lot
of straw. I assumed the site would likely be as barren of wheat field
stubble as it would be trees. One could as easily haul in lumber for
roofing as one could a truckload of straw.

Kivas used large timbers cut and dragged 100 miles (or less) from the
closest forest. More effort than a weeks retreat could justify.
Navajo Hogans built roofs using shorter pieces of lumber bridging
what they could of the opening and then laid the next layer of
timbers on the centerpoints of the first, resulting in a flatter
version of your dome, but again a lot less work to maneuver 4x4s than
bales. Mind you, the SB dome idea isn't a bad one either - just
depends on what is available closer to the site - some cut lumber or
some bales. The lumber could be hauled back whence it came and
reused, unlike the bales. Leaving a giant hole in the desert doesn't
sound so wildlife friendly though, even if filled in with a collapsed
pile of bales. Better think of returning the site to as-you-found-it
condition. Even the "Burning Man" celebrants do that.

If this site is as hostile as you are assuming, I doubt that little
saplings would survive on their own without supplemental water. There
are probably good reasons why there aren't any trees there now. Maybe
something simple like NO WATER. If there aren't trees there now they
won't automatically be happy in that environment just because a merry
band of balers plant them and weave them into a garland.

Now a dome of beer bottles sounds nifty but will undoubtedly take a
lot more volunteers or a very long time. One for the roof... tew for
the roof... tre fr th ruuf... fore - he's a jolly good fellow....
roof, what roof? Mayhaps this will take an international emergency
call for national teams to compete in and a serious cry of "Dome!
Must Do the Dome!" What year was this Corroboree to be held anyway?

Cheers,
Rick
