Sounds like a serious fire hazard to me.

Straw & wood chips & wood pellets & wax & heat in the roof  = no more house.

General rule of thumb is if you're putting something flammable in, 
especially in your roof/attic space where the temperatures can get 
pretty hot, you'd better make sure that you've got it swathed in 
non-flammable materials.  Spraying a clay slip on seems to be the 
preferred method, though you could probably use other fireproofing 
materials.
