SB: FW: Plaster reinforcement
catherine, you wrote <<snip>> if anyone had ever considered using fiber
mesh
reinforcement instead of chicken wire and diamond lath to reinforce the
plaster....
we lime plastered our house last summer and used a plastic reinforcement
mesh - marketed in england as autex. Its a plastic mesh with the holes
about 0.75 cms. We applied it by spraying on a scratch coat of lime
plaster and then bedding the mesh into the scratch coat. We found that
by doing this we got no cracking over changes in material - straw to
timber etc. To give a key over the timber prior to the scratch coat we
used reed matting which gave a good mechanical key. The plasterer who
was advising us first saw the technique used for gypsum and concrete
plasters/renders in germany. There is a small mention of it in the
edition of the last straw which focussed on plastering. Given it is
plastic I doubt it has much in the way of environmental credentials but
it certainly worked very well.
