There is some CMHC testing that compared R values of bales walls, in 
laid-flat and in on-edge configurations. In either orientation, the R 
value was virtually identical. As you mentioned, the grain of the straw 
in the bale presents differing R values to heat flow, but those 
differences happen to favor the on-edge configuration.

If you need the test result reference, I will dig for it.
