The plaster is intended to serve several functions: 
rodent/insect/fire/air/moisture barrier as well as providing in-plane shear 
resistance and in Australia, a barrier against drunks driving SUVs. 

If your proposed "breather-membrane" system can provide all of the same 
functions or if you provide suitable substitutes, then the larch rainscreen 
cladding system should be fine.
