SB: Re: Bale tops
Hi Paul
We left our bale tops for the most part unrendered. I started hauling mud up
there in 5 gal. buckets but found it difficult to get the bucket in between
the roof and bales so I gave up! As recommended in some of the books though,
we did drape the top in plastic. This eliminates, hopefully, the possibility
of the bales getting wet from above via a faulty roof or flood from the
second floor. The fiberglass ceiling insulation then runs over that. I
should also note that we did try to mud bale tops in proximity to electrical
wiring (the only ignition source in our walls). Without a source of ignition
it seems unlikely for walls of any type to catch fire. As I have said
before, if fire reaches the top of my walls, the last thing I'm going to be
concerned about as I sift through the ashes of what was once my home, is
what my walls were made out of.
As for rodents, a sidebar to my 5yr project is this. I have yet to find any
mouse nests in the straw, but a number of them in fiberglass (no accounting
for taste eh?).
