RE: SB: instant hot water heaters?
I'll see if I can kill two birds with one stone here (...although I would never try to kill one...)(or throw stones, for that matter - glass houses, and all)
The model I have is the Aquastar 125B(NG). At the moment, it only serves one sink, as the local bldg dept only allows for one sink & one toilet, as it is a "guest house." They would not allow for a shower or kitchen/second sink. As if guests wouldn't want to shower! The longest hot-water run is only going to be about 17 ft. (5.5 meters?). Anyway, the shower, kitchen sink and gas stove are going in after the final inspection. (don't tell anyone! ;)) In fact, noone is even allowed to "live" in here!
It cost about US$460 including shipping (purchased through that evil-but-oh-so-cheap mega-store, Lowe's). It's supposed to serve a full house, and they even claim it will work for commercial applications. We actually had to return the first one, as it was seriously damaged, but the second was in good shape.
The reason it ended up on the outside is rather a long story, but I'll do my best to make it brief. If I had put it inside, because it's gas-fired it would've had to have it's own closet, sealed to the inside, and well vented to the outside. As I have no floor space to spare (only 350 sq. ft + sleeping loft), an exterior mounting with it's own cabinet seemed the logical option. Oddly enough the instructions included said it could be installed indoors, suggesting a hall closet or such, with no need to seal it off seperate from the living area. The building inspector here (who has several years experience under his belt) seemed to be especially paranoid about gas appliances - we really had a hard time finding a water heater and a gas-fired room heater that he would pass.
