On-demand, gas-fired water heaters are the norm in Chile. In eight years, I
have had no problems due to hard water (which we have). About every two
years, one must clean the filter which clogs with sand and grit. They work
well with no hot/cold cycles and they cost about U$300. The tank water
heaters in the U.S. are an invention of the gas and electric companies to
get people to use more of their products.
