RE: SB: RE: Rainscreen Claddings

A method I came up with a few years ago here on my "conventional" home was to run thin cable from the eave to stakes in the ground, and then planted morning glories. I did this specifically in front of my equator-facing windows, as the walls don't especially need rain protection. It works wonderfully, providing shade in the summer months, and in this climate they die out in the fall, leaving the window exposed for the winter sun.
As far as rain protection goes, it allows me to leave my windows open during a rain, without the rain blowing in. At least not in big drops - more like a fine mist, if anything.
I imagine pole beans would work as well, if edibles are preferred, or decorative gourds, these are all "twining" and not the damaging sticky root/tendril type.
When I moved in here, there was what I called a "trumpet vine" (never figured out exactly what it was) on one wall, and when I opened up the wall, I found the vine inside the wall, with lots of that sticky sweet stuff and a quite healthy nest of ants, appearently drawn to the sticky stuff. Needless to say, that vine is long gone now!
