SB: New member intro

Dear SB listers, I've been reading the posts for the last few weeks and
thought I should introduce myself to the list. I don't know much about SB
construction (I got really interested after seeing a show about it and
reading Carolyn Roberts' book), but am interested in building a small house
(1200-1400 s.f.) in the Texas Hill Country. I have looked at the Texas Straw
Bale Assn. site.

I'd really appreciate some general info. on what to expect in terms of costs.
My fiance and I are trying to be realistic about what we can do ourselves.
We'd really like to find a builder in our area with SB experience who would
let us work along with the crew when we can. Is this a realistic
expectation? I'd appreciate hearing back from anyone who's done this.
Obviously, we'd want to see a builder's previous SB homes. Are there any
questions we should be sure to ask a prospective builder?

One more question. Would it be possible to build a lg. garage/workshop that
was a mix of SB, but had traditional garage doors? Are hybrids of SB and
other construction techniques an option?

Sorry for the long msg!
